There are four district courts in Estonia
District courts as courts of the first instance hear all civil, criminal and misdemeanour matters. The decisions of district courts can be appealed to the circuit court.

There are 67 positions for judges at the Tallinn Courthouse of Harju District Court.
There are 28 positions for judges in Viru District Court:
- Jõhvi Courthouse – 11;
- Narva Courthouse – 10;
- Rakvere Courthouse – 7.
There are 21 positions for judges in Pärnu District Court:
- Pärnu Courthouse – 11;
- Haapsalu Courthouse – 3;
- Kuressaare Courthouse – 2;
- Rapla Courthouse – 3;
- Paide Courthouse – 2.
There are 36 positions for judges in Tartu District Court:
- Tartu Courthouse – 20;
- Jõgeva Courthouse – 4;
- Viljandi Courthouse – 4;
- Valga Courthouse – 3;
- Võru Courthouse – 3;
- Põlva Courthouse – 2.
Proceedings in district courts are regulated by the Code of Civil Procedure in civil matters, the Code of Criminal Procedure in criminal matters and the Code of Misdemeanour Procedure in misdemeanour matters.
