Probation

A probationer is a convicted offender whom a court has placed under the supervision of a probation supervisor.
There are a total of almost 7200 persons in Estonia who have been placed under probation supervision.
The following persons shall be subject to probation supervision:

a person who has been given a conditional sentence – a person with respect to whom a probation period from 18 to 36 months is applied;

a person released from prison before termination of the period of serving the sentence – a person released before termination of the term of sentence and with respect to whom a probation period is applied to the extent of the term of sentence but not for a shorter period than one year;

a person performing community service – a person with respect to whom with his or her consent the application of imprisonment for a term of up to two years has been substituted by community service. The time for performing the work shall be up to 24 months;

a minor with respect to whom supervision of conduct as a sanction has been applied – a minor may be released from punishment and placed under the probation supervision of a probation officer for up to one year. The probation period can be extended, if necessary.
